Founder's Story

My dog hid her food rather than eat it. For two years, I thought that was just her.

Then she'd reluctantly chew a few pieces. The bowl was very rarely empty — food sat there all day, slowly disappearing, hidden in corners she thought I couldn't see.

At first, I thought it was cute.

Pipsqueak would pick up a piece of kibble, trot off, and hide it — behind a cushion, under the couch, in a corner. Then come back for another. I'd watch her do it and laugh. What a funny little dog.

It took me too long to realise she wasn't coming back to eat any of it. Dinnertime had become a chore she wanted no part of. The only thing that worked was placing each piece directly in front of her nose — she'd eat it then, probably just to please us.

This was expensive kibble. The kind with a chicken breast on the bag. The kind the pet shop assures you is "premium."

Every vet said the same thing.

The stress of it was real. We were travelling and didn't have a single trusted local vet — every time we found someone new, I'd ask about her eating. The answer was almost always the same:

"Some dogs are just fussy. She's a Dachshund."

I kept coming back to that. Was she fussy? This was a dog who would lunge at something unspeakable on the footpath without a second thought. She wasn't fussy. She had standards.

"We were eating a balanced diet every day. She was eating the canine equivalent of breakfast cereal. Twice a day. For years."

Then one vet actually listened.

One vet suggested opening a tin of sardines over her bowl. We tried it that evening. She gobbled the whole thing up. Bowl clean, no hiding. Done in under a minute.

I sat there and something clicked. Here was Pipsqueak watching us eat a balanced diet every day — real meat, vegetables, whole foods — while we fed her the canine equivalent of breakfast cereal. Twice a day. For years. Made from rendered proteins, bulked out with starchy fillers, then coated in oil to make it smell appealing enough to eat. It meets the legal minimum. But minimum isn't the same as good.

She'd known all along. She'd been trying to tell us in the only way she could.

She went from hiding her food to cleaning her bowl. Your dog deserves the same.

"Chauncey is not food driven and doesn't eat readily — but with Pip Eats he will stand there waiting for it to be served and eats it all immediately. It has never happened before no matter what I give him."

So we spent two years building something better.

Guy and I spent two years working with a vet nutritionist on five AAFCO-compliant recipes — all made from ingredients you'd actually recognise. With Pipsqueak as our brutally honest taste tester. If she didn't inhale it, we went back to the drawing board.

Heart-shaped frozen patties, made by our small team in our Brookvale kitchen. Real muscle meat. Real organ. Real vegetables. Nothing rendered, nothing your dog's body can't use. Pipsqueak has eaten nothing else for five years. She has never once hidden her food.
